Merging safely requires observation, appropriate speed and cooperation with other road users. Whether entering a freeway or joining two lanes into one, prepare early and avoid forcing your way into traffic.
- Check the road ahead
Look at the lane markings, signs and available space before reaching the merge point. Knowing what is ahead gives you more time to choose a suitable gap.
- Use your mirrors
Check your rear-view and side mirrors to understand the position and speed of surrounding vehicles. Continue monitoring traffic as you approach the merge.
- Signal early
Use your indicator early enough for other drivers to understand your intention. Signalling does not automatically give you right of way, so confirm that the movement is safe.
- Match the traffic speed
When entering a freeway, use the merging lane to build an appropriate speed. Joining traffic while travelling much slower than surrounding vehicles can create unnecessary risk.
- Check your blind spot
Before moving across, briefly check over your shoulder in the direction of the merge. Motorcycles or other vehicles may be hidden from your mirrors.
- Choose a safe gap
Select a gap large enough to enter smoothly without causing another driver to brake suddenly. Adjust your speed gradually rather than making abrupt movements.
- Follow the road markings
Different merging situations may have different give-way requirements. Pay attention to lane lines, signs and traffic conditions, and give way whenever required.
- Cooperate with other drivers
If you are already travelling in the continuing lane, maintain a predictable speed and allow a reasonable gap when it is safe. Avoid accelerating merely to prevent another vehicle from merging.
- Complete the merge smoothly
Steer gradually into the lane, establish a safe following distance and cancel your indicator after completing the manoeuvre.
