There are certain instances where the roundabout might be anything but circular and the way to recognise this is to be aware of what a roundabout signage looks like. A roundabout can have anything from 3 to any number of exits.<\/p>\n<p>Its purpose is to regulate a continuous flow of traffic. Road rules are in place to produce a better combination of travel safety and efficiency which would otherwise cause traffic to degenerate into a disorganised mess.<\/p>\n<h3>How to Use a Roundabout?<\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 Slow down as you approach the intersection.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Give way to pedestrians and bicyclists crossing the roadway.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Watch for signs and directional markings.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Enter the roundabout if the gap in traffic is sufficient.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Drive in a clockwise direction around the roundabout until you reach your exit. Do not stop or overtake other vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 If you miss your exit, continue around until you return to your exit.<\/p>\n<h2>Roundabout Rules in WA<\/h2>\n<p><strong>When turning left at a roundabout:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make your intentions clear by indicating left<\/li>\n<li>Indicate early giving enough warning to both following and approaching traffic<\/li>\n<li>Most times you will exit from the left but on the odd occasion where you will need to exit from a lane other than the left be sure to indicate and check your blind spot i.e. over your shoulder, before doing so.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When making a U-turn at a roundabout, or when turning right:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make your intentions clear by indicating right<\/li>\n<li>Indicate early giving enough warning to both following and approaching traffic<\/li>\n<li>Indicate your intentions to turn left prior to the exit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When driving straight through a roundabout:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not indicate on entry<\/li>\n<li>Indicating left, prior to the exit.<\/li>\n<li>If you have to change lanes, indicate your intentions and make sure that it is safe to do so.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_399\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-399\" src=\"https:\/\/www.defensivedriving.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/roundabout-1-300x169.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.defensivedriving.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/roundabout-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.defensivedriving.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/roundabout-1-768x431.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.defensivedriving.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/roundabout-1-1024x575.jpg 1024w\" alt=\"Roundabout Rules\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Road rules are in place to produce a better combination of travel safety and efficiency which would otherwise cause traffic to degenerate into a disorganised mess.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Some History &amp; Information<\/h3>\n<p>Roundabouts or circular junctions, as it was called, date back to 1768 but it was not until the 1960s that the modern roundabout was in fact created.<\/p>\n<p>In Britain, mandatory road rules for roundabout use were introduced in 1966.
