A Practical Driving Assessment can feel stressful, but good preparation and consistent driving habits can help you approach it with greater confidence.
The assessment is designed to determine whether you can control the vehicle safely, follow road rules and respond appropriately to traffic conditions. Passing is never guaranteed, but the following tips can help you prepare.
- Practise consistently
Regular practice helps safe driving habits become more natural. Include different roads, traffic conditions, intersections, parking situations and manoeuvres in your preparation.
- Know the vehicle
Before the assessment, become familiar with the vehicle’s controls, mirrors, indicators, brakes and steering. Adjust your seat and mirrors before moving.
- Observe continuously
Check your mirrors regularly and scan the road ahead for changing conditions. Perform the appropriate shoulder checks before moving away, changing lanes or merging.
- Follow signs and road markings
Pay close attention to speed limits, stop signs, traffic lights, lane markings and give-way requirements. Avoid rushing because of pressure from other drivers.
- Signal clearly
Signal early enough to communicate your intentions to other road users. Remember that signalling does not automatically give you right of way—always confirm that it is safe to proceed.
- Choose safe gaps
Remain patient at intersections, roundabouts and when entering traffic. Do not accept a gap unless you are confident that the manoeuvre can be completed safely.
- Remain calm after a mistake
A small mistake does not necessarily mean the assessment is over. Stay focused on the road and continue driving safely instead of dwelling on what happened.
- Ask for honest feedback
Before booking your assessment, ask your instructor which skills require further practice. Extra preparation may be worthwhile if important areas are not yet consistent.
