Changing lanes safely requires good observation, clear signalling and correct timing. Rushing the manoeuvre or failing to check a blind spot can place you and other road users at risk.
- Check the road ahead
Before changing lanes, make sure traffic conditions ahead allow you to complete the manoeuvre safely. Avoid changing lanes near intersections, pedestrian crossings or anywhere lane markings prohibit it.
- Check your mirrors
Use your rear-view and side mirrors to assess the position and speed of surrounding vehicles. Make sure there is a suitable gap in the lane you intend to enter.
- Signal early
Use your indicator before beginning the lane change. Signalling gives other drivers time to understand your intentions, but it does not automatically give you right of way.
- Check your blind spot
Briefly look over your shoulder in the direction you intend to move. This shoulder check can reveal vehicles, motorcycles or cyclists that may not be visible in your mirrors.
- Move smoothly
When the lane is clear, maintain an appropriate speed and steer smoothly into the new lane. Avoid sudden braking, acceleration or sharp steering movements.
- Cancel your indicator
Once your vehicle is completely established in the new lane, make sure your indicator has turned off.
Remain patient and avoid unnecessary lane changes. Always maintain a safe following distance and allow other drivers sufficient space.
