Learning to drive takes time, practice and concentration. Recognising common mistakes can help new drivers develop safer habits and become more confident behind the wheel.
- Not observing properly
New drivers sometimes focus only on the vehicle directly ahead. Regularly check your mirrors, scan the road and look for pedestrians, cyclists and changing traffic conditions.
- Following too closely
Driving too close reduces the time available to react if the vehicle ahead slows or stops. Maintain a safe following distance and allow additional space in poor weather or heavy traffic.
- Driving too fast for the conditions
The posted speed limit is the maximum permitted under suitable conditions. Slow down when visibility is poor or when roads are wet, busy or unfamiliar.
- Forgetting to signal
Signal early before turning or changing lanes. A signal tells other road users what you intend to do, but always check that it is safe before moving.
- Missing blind spots
Mirrors do not show every area around a vehicle. Perform a brief shoulder check before changing lanes, merging or moving away from the kerb.
- Becoming distracted
Mobile phones, passengers, music and navigation systems can reduce concentration. Prepare everything before moving and keep your attention on driving.
- Braking or steering suddenly
Harsh braking and sharp steering can unsettle the vehicle. Look well ahead, anticipate hazards and make smooth, controlled movements whenever possible.
- Becoming overconfident
Passing a driving test does not mean the learning process is finished. Continue practising, remain patient and adjust your driving to the road and traffic conditions.
