Obtaining a driver’s licence in Western Australia involves several stages designed to help new drivers develop knowledge, practical skills and safe driving habits.
Requirements can change and may differ according to your age and circumstances. Always confirm the current process with the Western Australian Government before applying.
- Learn the WA road rules
Begin by studying the official road rules, signs and safe-driving information. Use current Western Australian Government learning materials and practice quizzes to prepare.
- Apply for a learner’s permit
You must meet the eligibility, identification and testing requirements before receiving a learner’s permit. Once issued, the permit allows you to practise under the required supervision and conditions.
- Gain supervised driving experience
Practise in a variety of conditions, beginning in quieter areas before progressing to busier roads. Display the required learner plates and follow all learner-driver conditions.
- Develop practical driving skills
Professional lessons can help you learn correct observation, steering, braking, parking, lane changing and hazard-management techniques. Regular practice between lessons can also improve confidence and consistency.
- Complete the required assessments
The Western Australian licensing process may include knowledge, hazard-perception and practical driving assessments. Check the current requirements before booking because they can vary according to your age and licensing stage.
- Continue learning after the test
Passing the practical assessment is an important achievement, but safe driving skills continue to develop through experience. Provisional drivers must obey all applicable restrictions and licence conditions.
For current eligibility, fees, waiting periods and assessment requirements, consult the official Western Australian Government licensing information.
