Western Australia’s Slow Down, Move Over law—commonly called SLOMO—helps protect emergency personnel and roadside workers attending incidents.
When approaching a stationary emergency or incident-response vehicle displaying flashing lights, drivers must slow down, move over when possible and pass at no more than 40 km/h.
Which vehicles are covered?
The law applies to vehicles attending roadside incidents, including:
- WA Police Force vehicles
- Fire and emergency-services vehicles
- St John ambulances
- RAC and other breakdown-assistance vehicles
- Main Roads incident-response vehicles
- Tow trucks
What should drivers do?
- Check your surroundings
Look in your mirrors and assess the traffic behind and beside you before slowing down.
- Reduce speed safely
Brake gradually rather than suddenly. Pass the incident at no more than 40 km/h and be prepared to stop if directed.
- Move over when possible
If another lane travels in the same direction and it is safe to change lanes, move away from the incident to provide additional space.
- Follow all directions
Obey instructions from police, emergency personnel and traffic controllers at the scene.
- Remain alert
Workers, damaged vehicles, debris or emergency equipment may be close to the roadway. Do not use your phone or allow other distractions to reduce your concentration.
The rule applies on all Western Australian roads, including highways and freeways. Drivers travelling in the opposite direction may also need to slow when an incident is in the centre of the road or on the median.
Penalties and road rules can change. Consult current Western Australian Government information for the latest requirements.
